Why is my Nissan Xterra (2000) stalling?

My Nissan Xterra is making a hissing noise and has started turning off when I put it into drive or reverse. It also jerks violently when I'm at a stoplight or stop sign. This has just started, i think it may have something to do with the heat. Is there anyway to fix this easily or does a mechanic need to be involved?
