I have a problem with my canon rebel xs..?

i'm trying to shoot in manual setting but it's always underexposed. how can i change the exposure on Manual mode? because whenever i take pictures even the background is bright the outcome is still dark. and it says in the exposure -2 I just don't really know how to change. Or I can't remember if I press something. please I really need help..
