Astrophotography Question?

I have Meade telescope with a GoTo mount. I found the dumbbell nebula and I wanted to take a picture of it. The problem is when I put my Canon Rebel XS camera to the telescope, the telescope doesn't seem to slew or at least the picture doesn't show up right (stars are just big lines across the screen). Any suggestions?
