Adding to Hondo's comments you need to handle the cameras until you feel more comfortable with one over the other. My only comments being a life long Canon user. Is that I feel Canon's viewing screen is too busy. I never even gave Nikon a consideration as their accessories and lenses use to be out of sight price wise.

I'm writing a story about a man who once lived in Manhattan but who now lives in Chicago, but since I've never been to New York, let alone Manhattan, I was just wondering if there are any writers out there (or anyone with a nose) who could tell me some typical smells of Manhattan; that is, pleasant smells that might evoke a pique of nostalgia. The smell itself does not have to be too detailed. In fact, I'll only be using it for one line in the story. But I'd like to avoid the cliche smells of New York, i.e. pizza dough and subway cars perfumed with urine. Anyone?

Stop down your aperture. You are forgetting that there are 3 controls for light. ISO, Shutter and APERTURE. Try shooting at f/11 or even higher depending on how bright the scene is. For a bright night sky you may even be shooting as high as f/22
